a great deal of violence that this had not deterred audiences, in fact in some cases has inspired them to see the movies. Research has found that violence in movies
and television has a direct connection to social behaviours in children yet still many of the family based movies also contain unnecessary violent acts.
Violence is found in many movies of today and it is often wondered by the viewing audience if this violence is indeed necessary for the fulfillment of the film.
It is difficult to determine from a laymans perspective what is considered to be too much violence and what is an acceptable level of violence in order for the plot
of the story to be completed. Over the years, concerned parents, psychologists, sociologists and educators have devised a "violence formula" to help recognize necessary and unnecessary violence in film (Osborn,
2002). This "violence formula" is important in establishing unnecessary violence and the effect it has on the viewing audience. There are three factors
for the formula: does the violence drive the storyline, does the violence carry no consequences, and how are the concepts of "good" and "bad" used? The first factor focuses
on whether or not the title or plotline of the story focuses on violence. Some movies and television shows contain violent themes in their titles to attract viewers, for example
"Conan the Destroyer" and "Lethal Weapon", which indicate to the viewer that action and violence will be virtually guaranteed in the film and is a major attraction of the film.
Some movie may not have violent titles but may not be able to describe the plot without violence, for example "Seven" and "Kiss the Girls". These movies which are advertised
