is self-awareness. We may not always consider this a leadership characteristic but it is really necessary for anyone who will be successful. In todays environment, leaders need to be able
to make connections rather than foster separateness (M?ndez 2009). This goes along with creating interdependence on the team or in the entire organization. When people know their own success depends
on everyone else being successful, a spirit of interdependence is gained. There needs to be an attitude and focus on wholeness (M?ndez 2009). Regardless of the context or the place,
people need to feel connected to each other. Leaders are responsible for achieving this sense of unity among followers. This is true whether it is a small family-owned florist, a
small retail company, a huge corporation or any other public or private organization. Leaders must be accountable and responsible. They must take responsibility for their mistakes as well as
their successes. They must be accountable to the community of workers. This means they must have integrity and if they have true integrity, they will make ethical decisions. Communication
skills have always been important for an effective leader but given the diversity of workplaces today, communication becomes even more important. Exceptional communication skills will help the leader in any
type of negotiation situation. Recently, Rob Goffee, a professor at the London Business School, and Gareth Jones former director of human resources and communications at the BBC, discussed leadership in
todays environment (The Thinkers 50 2010). They made an interesting observation. In the old days, organizations had clear hierarchies with clear career paths and clear boundaries. These hierarchies provided meaning
