complex nervous system. This interconnectivity allows communication of the various body parts, a communication which enables a sort of universal intelligence. Universal intelligence, in turn, controls the
bodys innate intelligence in that it has the ability to direct the life force through the nervous system (Mootz and Phillips, 2003). D.D. Palmer expounded on the means through
which the body communicates within itself with the contention that there is: "universal intelligence that
is manifest in living things as an innate intelligence, which provides purpose, balance, and direction to all biologic function" (Mootz and Phillips, 2003).
This process is more commonly defined through the concept of homeostasis, that process which is central to most aspects of
life. The process of homeostasis itself, however, is holistic in nature. Holism, after all, embodies the concept of healing and homeostasis is a critical element in healing.
Homeostasis as it relates to the concept of universal intelligence, therefore, is a concept which is intimately entwined with energy flows, touch, and complimentary or alternative therapies (Chang, 2001).
Travelbee (2002) in particular recognizes the spiritual dimension of holistic care. Watsons (2002) views are important as well in regard to spiritualism. She writes that nursing should entail:
"a sense of reverence and sacredness with regard to life and all living things. It
incorporates both art and science, as they are also being redefined, acknowledging a convergence between art, science, and spirituality" (Watson, 2002).
