figure another 16 million people who are underinsured (Center for American Progress, 2007), it becomes overwhelming and it is a tragedy, in fact, it is a crime. Consider this. The
CDC also reported that at least 18,000 people die prematurely because they do not have health care insurance and mortality would be reduced by 10 to 15 percent if uninsured
persons had insurance (Center for American Progress, 2007). Health care costs and health care insurance premiums increase exponentially each year (Center for American Progress, 2007). Between 2000 and 2006, health
insurance premiums soared by 87 percent (Center for American Progress, 2007). At the same time, wages increased by only 20 percent during those years (Center for American Progress, 2007). In
2005, health insurance policies increased by more than $900 for families with the average policy costing more per year than the annual income for a minimum wage earner (Center for
American Progress, 2007). These increase hurt everyone, for example, General Motors increased the base selling price of its cars by $1,525 in order to pay health insurance premiums for its
workers (Center for American Progress, 2007). Something must be done. Universal health care has been proposed by many politicians, including former President Clinton, and by health care organizations as well
as many citizens for years. What would universal health care do? A universal health care plan is referred to as a single-payer system, a national health care and a united
