This 32 page paper discuses the United Nations Human Development Programme, the UN Human Development Report and the UN Human Development Index. The paper begins with an overview of the history of the United Nations Development Programme, which can be traced back to the establishment of the UN itself. The evolution of the programs is traced from that point. The next section in this essay discussed the founding of the Human Development Report Office and its purpose which is followed by an explanation and discussion of the United Nations Human Development report, the first of which was commissioned in 1990. The purpose of the Report was and is to place an emphasis on people and human development instead of placing such a focus on economics of a country. Classifications of countries in the report is explained. The Human Development Index is discussed next. The Index ranks countries according to their Human Development Index calculations. The different dimensions in the indices are explains. The formula used to determine the Human Development Index ranking is reported with examples. the Charter framers believed were essential for peace (Mendez, 2002). Mendez goes on to say that the Charter "called for international economic and social co-operation and for this purpose created
an Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as a principal organ acting under the authority of the General Assembly" (Mendez, 2002). One of the first things the United Nation did was
to provide various kinds of technical assistance to underdeveloped countries, at their request, most of which had in the recent past gained their independence from colonization (Mendez, 2002). The UN
did not really have very much money for assistance and countries in need of help were asking for special programmes with alternative kinds of financing (Mendez, 2002). Many of the
donor countries, including the United States, opposed this idea (Mendez, 2002). Still, there were a number of Secretariat units, including the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, who were instrumental
in developing the theoretical foundations, legal framework and operational designs for technical assistance programmes (Mendez, 2002). Advisors and the economic staff itself included many notables who would go on
to be awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science (Mendez, 2002). Harry S. Truman gave the cause a boost when, in his 1949 presidential inaugural speech he said that
technical assistance programs were needed to help the many underdeveloped countries around the world (Mendez, 2002). As a result of President Trumans support for the special programmes, other nations that
