common heritage of beliefs that are shared by all Christians. Both churches, for example, share in the belief that God has a Triune nature, which Christians understand as the Father,
Son and Holy Spirit (UMC, 2009a; Curtis, 1996). Also both churches believe that Jesus Christ is both divine and human, and that salvation is due to his sacrifice, with redemption
made possible through belief in him (UMC, 2009a; Curtis, 1996). There are, of course, also differences between the beliefs and practices of these churches. For example, Russian Orthodox services
are recognized for their pageantry, as ROC services involve a formal liturgy and accompanying rituals, which includes "multiple elaborate systems of symbols," which are intended to covey "the content of
the faith to believers" (Curtis, 1996). In contrast, services within the United Methodist Church, as with other Protestant sects, are relatively plain as Protestantism departed from the pageantry and ritual
of the Roman Catholic Church, from which the Eastern Orthodox Churches derive. As with Roman Catholicism, there are seven sacraments celebrated in the Russian Orthodox Church, which include the
sacrament of Confession ("The Sacraments, 2010). While Russian Orthodox Christians are encouraged to confess their sins each day to God privately with their prayers, they are also encouraged to participate
"in the sacrament of Confession with a priest" ("The Sacraments, 2010). As with many Protestant sects, the United Methodist Church recognizes and practices those sacraments in which Jesus participated
during this life on earth, which are Baptism and the celebration of the Lords Supper, i.e., Communion (UMC, 2009a). The Methodist Church regards the Lords Supper as a "holy meal
