only after many complaints of workers toiling in dismal conditions. There are many unions in the public sector today such as those for teachers and firefighters. Of course, there are
many unions in the private sector as well. Still, unionism is not so powerful today, but in the past, these organizations were the initiators of labor law. Today, in this
litigious society, it seems as if workers take care of themselves more and more frequently and corporations are complying with the law. While unions do exist, they are less powerful
now than in the past. In some way, other organizations, like the governments safety board OSHA has been important in making sure that workers stay safe. While unions are
here to stay, they are undesirable as they can prompt strikes, work slowdowns, and will inevitably cost the companies more money. However, a good reason to allow union formation is
to attract good workers who are already members of a particular union. Additionally, by allowing unions, the organizations will enhance public relations overall. Although it is the case that there
are good reasons to allow the union to exist and even flourish, there are seemingly many more reasons to resist them. Some companies like WalMart refuse to allow unions in
because they are afraid of the ramifications. The primary problem with unions is that they can impact the legal environment. An example to help to illustrate the differences in the
legal environment from businesses with unions and those without comes from Kearney & Carnevales (2001) Labor Relations in the Public Sector. Authors explain that in the context of government work,
