Whether or not public schools should adhere to a dress code policy has been the subject of debate for years. There is no question
that this issue has raised a lot of controversy and there are outspoken opinions on both sides of this issue. However, there is an overwhelming amount of evidence which
suggests that requiring strict dress codes in public schools has a plethora of benefits which range from better grades, to lower drug use, to increased concentration in class and more.
Its hard to argue with such positive results. The Case for Strict Dress Code in Public Schools In May of 1995
there was a case in Phoenix, Arizona which articulates the controversy over this subject (Zirkel, 1998). This case involved an elementary school which had just imposed a mandatory dress
code (Zirkel, 1998). Some parents became so outraged that they actually marched into the school and into specific classrooms and started handing out literature which reflected their disdain for
this dress code policy (Zirkel, 1998). These parents even tried to get their children transferred to other schools outside of the district in question (Zirkel, 1998).
