exists in the present day. Schools are plagued by gangs, drugs and even pedophiles, and there seems to be little relief from the constantly barrage of sexual messages and social dilemmas. The school bully once feared because of his presence, now has a gun and doesnt just want the milk money; they will kill for the shoes on another childs feet. Gangs of kids drive by and will shoot - because of the clothes or colors someone is wearing, or because of who they know or where they live. Sometimes, for no apparent reason, a classmate will take up a weapon and shoot to kill. What can be done? A proposal that is being set forth with great vigor is mandatory uniforms in schools. President Clinton advocates for uniforms as a means to help reduce violence, promote discipline in the classroom and foster a better learning environment (Clinton, 1996). There is a plausible connection between the type of clothing worn by students and school violence. Fashion in the urban schools is dominated by gang related or gang like clothing. Oversized shirts and baggy pants are the choice of dress for many as a fashion statement but could be construed negatively and put those children at risk for intentional or unintentional violence (Gursky, 1996). The current clothing trends arose from inner city gang apparel that allowed the transportation of guns and drugs without detection. This fashion has been glamorized in popular music videos and worn by urban heroes the youth are wont to emulate (King, 1998). Violence and theft may also result out of jealousy and the financial inability to purchase these fashions, designer labels and athletic paraphernalia (King, 1998).
