the artefacts of a software system" (Booch et al, 1998). The use of this language ins the first step in the development of object oriented (OO) design methodology (Booch et
al, 1998). The notation that is used originates from three other object orientated design methodologies, the notations of Grady Booch where notations adopted are those which are used to describe
objects and the relationship of the objects; the Object-Modeling Technique (OMT) of James Rumbaugh and the approach of Ivar Jacobson which included the use case methodology (Amber, 2002).
UML was released by the Object Management Group (OMG) in 1997. The main aim was to give the community of developers a single stable and
standard language with which to develop and build computer applications (Amber, 2002). The benefits of a single language that is used by all has very obvious advantages in both ease
of use as well as more effective use of industry resources. With this standard language it becomes possible for professional in the IT industry to look a and examine plans
to an application to in the same way a builder could look at construction plans and understand them (Bell, 2002). One of the main reasons that this has become
the standard language is the way it is independent of programming language, for example, UML can be used in boot the J2EE shops and in the .NET shops(Bell, 2002). In
addition to this the notation is a true language rather than only a methodology as such it will fit in easily with a firms operations without needing any changes to
be made (Bell, 2002, Booch et al, 1998). As we have see, UMK is not a methodology, this means there is not requirement for the formal work products or
