whole. The following paper examines how unemployment affects the economy in the United States. Unemployment and Americas Economy "Most economists agree
that high levels of unemployment are costly not only to the individuals and families directly affected, but also to local and regional economies and the economy as a whole" (Tutor2u,
2006). Unemployment, through a waste of economic resources, essentially reduces the economic growth of the nation, and the potential growth as well (Tutor2u, 2006). In addition, when there is a
high level of unemployment the government, both federal and state, expend a great deal more money through helping those in need, working with programs, issues involving taxation, as well as
the need for borrowing revenue (Tutor2u, 2006). When people are unemployed they are generally receiving some sort of benefits whether those benefits
be unemployment benefits or welfare (Tutor2u, 2006). This also results in less taxes being paid to the government because the people are not working and thus paying no taxes (Tutor2u,
2006). "When individuals are unemployed, not only do they receive benefits but also pay no income tax" (Tutor2u, 2006). In addition, because they
are not making the money they did, or could, when employed they are spending less money. As such the entire economy suffers as there is less money circulating in the
economic realm and thus people who are employed, such as businesses, will lose money as well. They may even need more help from the government if the unemployment rate is
