topic that was addressed immediately by Americas Founding Fathers because the concept of religious freedom is interwoven in the historical fabric of the United States. The Puritans established their
own community in Plymouth, Massachusetts so they could express their austere Christian beliefs freely. The First Amendment of the Constitution clearly states, "Congress shall make no law respecting
an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" (The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America, 1979, p. 31). It further supports
"the right of the people peaceably to assemble," which includes assembly within churches, temples, mosques, and bible study groups (The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States
of America, 1979, p. 31). An intimate relationship between the Christian church in particular and the state dates back to the very beginning because religion played such a dominant
role in the settlement of America. However, an idea of a separation of church and state began to take shape in the early years of the Republic even though
no one will find any reference to a separation of church and state anywhere in the Constitution or mentioned in any law (Huston, 2006). The statement is attributed
to the father of the Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson, who feared that if such a distinction was not made early on, that America would move away from its democratic
republic roots and be transformed by Protestant Fundamentalists into a religious state. Ever since, the connection between church and state continues to be redefined by law and by decisions
