some of the methods that have led to increased understanding of brain function. Discussion Well consider both surgical and medical techniques in our survey of the subject, including PET scans;
brain trauma; electrical stimulation; brain surgery and single unit recording. The PET is "a biological imaging examination ... [that] can detect and stage most cancers, often before they are
evident through other tests. PET can also give physicians important early information about heart disease and many neurological disorders, like Alzheimers" (PET: a new era in diagnostic imaging). CT
and other scans work by examining the structure of the body; PET works by examining the bodys chemistry (PET: a new era in diagnostic imaging). Disease processes cause chemical changes
in the body, and the new PET scan can find and identify those processes (PET: a new era in diagnostic imaging). When it comes to neurological problems, PET can identify
specific areas. It can "localize the brain site of seizure activity," which is important for "for children with uncontrollable seizures who are candidates for hemispherectomy as cure"; PET can tell
whether or not a muscle tremor is Parkinsons disease or a different disorder; the scan is able to determine if a brain tumor is malignant or benign; and it can
"map the areas of the brain responsible for movement, speech, and other critical functions," which is an indispensable guide for neurosurgeons (Neurological disorders: mapping the brains function). Brain trauma can
be helpful in learning about the functions that are controlled by different areas of the brain. Probably the most celebrated case of brain injury is that of Phineas Gage, who
is the first person known to have survived traumatic brain injury. Gage was "the foreman of a railway construction gang" that was preparing the roadbed for the "Rutland and Burlington
