understanding what is taking place and what will take place. However, the student working on this project and explaining that in his or her paper must be well-versed in several
of the most fundamental components of the statistical process itself. The following brief descriptions address the concepts of: Mean, mode, and median; frequency distribution, and; sampling. Mean, Mode, and
Median According to Sowey (2003), just as most human cultures of the 21st century have made every effort to assure that their people advance in terms of literacy, it is
also important to advance in what he calls "functional numeracy" (pp. 89). Sowey adds that it is possible to attain a solid measure of "functional numeracy" even if one feels
an aversion to numbers or thinks of themselves as "no good at math." He explains: "It is not the mathematical manipulation of numbers (or symbols representing numbers) that is central
to the notion of numeracy. Rather, it is the ability to draw correct meaning from a logical argument couched in numbers" (pp. 89). In order to reach what Sowey
refers to as the: "... competence to understand, and argue back to, a statistic and to draw accurate meaning from, and criticize, a statistical argument about the real world" (pp.
