depression in hopes that more people will begin to understand the true impact this disease can have on a persons life. SYMPTOMS OF MAJOR DEPRESSION According to the Mental
Health Net (2002) there are a myriad of symptoms that can be an indication of major depression. Generally speaking if several symptoms are constant for two weeks or more,
it would be to the individuals best interest to see a doctor in case he or she is suffering major depressive disorder. Some of the main symptoms one can suffer
are: * depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day * markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities significant weight loss when not dieting or
weight gain * insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day * psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day * fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day
* feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt nearly every day * diminished ability to think or concentrate, nearly every day * recurrent thoughts of death (not just fear
of dying) (MHN 2002, PG). THE SERIOUS IMPACT OF DEPRESSION Those with true major depressive disorder will find that their lives
are greatly impacted on a daily basis due to their illness. If depression goes untreated for any length of time a patient can become suicidal, unable to work and
in some cases become unable to leave their homes. For this reason depression has an impact not only on the individual but on family and loved ones as well.
