Muslim women who are living in mainstream US society in many cases struggle with a definite societal stigma. These women
are severely misunderstood and often severely discriminated against by various factions of our society. To overcome these problems we must strive to better understand these women. With understanding
comes acceptance. The intent of this paper is to promote that understanding through an objective consideration of the topic. That consideration will be based partially at least on
the literature. Even more valuable, however, is the insight that will be gained in a one-on-one interview with a Muslim woman.
For most Muslim women their religion defines their roles in society. From a Western feminist perspective, that same religion is regarded as the primary oppressor of Muslim women.
Many Muslim women themselves are denouncing their religion (Gehrke-White, 2007). Others are calling for a serious reassessment of it (Gehrke-White, 2007). Other Muslim women, however, continue to embrace
their religion and their culture. It is these women, perhaps more than any of the others, that call out to us to understand them.
