Lewis and Clark. While his work details much of the travels of Lewis and Clark, his focus is more on Lewis and Jefferson. The following paper examines aspects of the work, discussing the authors thesis and purpose, the possible controversies in the novel, any new ideas, and the convincing, or not, nature of the work. Thesis As mentioned in the introduction, this work is primarily about Lewis, although it is also a work that illustrates the intriguing and powerful journey of Lewis and Clark. Bearing in mind that the focus, however, is on Lewis, we can see that the thesis of this work is to prove that Lewis was much of the power and mastermind, in combination with Jefferson, behind the travels. Ambrose wants to show us that Lewis was "Curious and inquisitive as well as coolheaded and courageous" (Ambrose Chapter 1). And he wanted to also illustrate that he shared such traits with Jefferson and that it was Lewis relationship with Jefferson that made the trip possible and thus the rest of the work simply looks to show how unique a character Lewis was. Authors Purpose Aside from the purpose related to the thesis it seems that one of the most powerful things that Ambrose is trying to do is show the reader what the journey was like, what the men were like, and what the country was like during this particular time. Ambrose does this by using the journals of Lewis and Clarks travels and by making the journey himself. In taking this journey himself Ambrose is able to put a contemporary flair to the journey, presenting it in a manner that modern day readers can better comprehend.
