incorporated a great deal of truth about slavery and thus brought the institution of slavery, and its horrific realities, to the forefront of society. It was a work that was
sold in great numbers, in numerous countries, and in many different languages. It was, in short, read by people all around the world. As such it has often been cited
as being a very powerful influence in the fight for the abolition of slavery. The following paper examines what the influence of this particular book truly was in history and
in relationship to the abolition movement, primarily in the Northern states. Uncle Toms Cabin and the Abolition Movement As mentioned, this book sold many copies all around the
world. One author indicates the following in those respects: "The first 5,000 copies sold in two days. By the end of the year, over 300,000 copies had been sold. The
book was translated into thirty-seven languages and is estimated to have sold over two million copies in the United States and abroad"1 Interestingly enough, however, and perhaps not surprisingly, it
was not a work that everyone read with the same amount of conviction or one that everyone read from the same perspective. In looking at how various people saw
and interpreted this book differently there are a few primary sources that offer up perceptions of the work. One author clearly held views that were very similar to many in
the South when stating, in 1853, ""Should Mrs. Stowes vile aspersion of southern character, and her loose, reckless and wicked misrepresentations of the institution of slavery in the southern States
