novel, Uncle Toms Cabin. Characters The name-sake of our story is "Uncle Tom." He is a loving and kind man who lives his belief system. He would give
up all he has (including his own family) to be able to help some one else. He is the example of "turning the other cheek," and even when he
is treated poorly and, works at showing others how it might be different than it actually is. Mr. Shelby means well, but just cant hold everything together; whether his illness
has weakened him, we cannot be sure - certainly he could be the metaphor for the weakened and suffering male of the South. He is not with us long.
On the other hand Mrs. Shelby is the lady with "grit." She vows to keep the plantation together, even though she secretly feels that slavery is wrong.
