Christian virtues of forbearance, forgiveness and tolerance that made him memorable. This paper discusses the character of Uncle Tom and what it is about him that contributed to Northern determination
to end slavery. Discussion The book is today recognized as a piece of mediocre writing at best when considered from the point of view of literary technique, but it aroused
such powerful emotions when it came out that it is remarkable for that alone. A story is often cited that suggests President Lincoln himself credited Harriet Beecher Stowe with helping
to start the Civil War. At the very least, the book helped explode the myth that slavery was somehow a charming and quaint institution that blacks enjoyed; it was exposed
for the horrific crime it is. Stowe described whippings, beatings and torture and tore away the fa?ade of gentility that the South used to hide the truth of the system.
The book is organized roughly into four sections; Tom appears in the first three. When the story opens, Tom is on a farm in Kentucky owned by Arthur Shelby
and his wife Emily (Stowe). They have to raise money to pay off debts, and they are forced to consider selling some of their slaves to do so; they decide
to sell Uncle Tom, who is middle-aged at the time, and a young boy named Harry, who is the son of Emilys maid Eliza (Stowe). Before we even meet
Tom, we hear his owner, Shelby, describe him as "Tom is a good, steady, sensible, pious fellow. He got religion at a camp-meeting, four years ago; and I believe he
