to help, and to stop his ravaging of the people. The embassy consists of Ulysses, Phoenix, and Ajax, all who were sent by Agamemnon. Each one of these men plays
a different part in trying to convince Achilles to stop almost as though they had it planned to psychologically convince him or sway him to their side. The following paper
examines each of the mens speeches as they approach Achilles. Ulysses Before Ulysses speaks we get a sense that the three have a plan for "As soon as
they had had enough to eat and drink, Ajax made a sign to Phoenix, and when he saw this, Ulysses filled his cup with wine and pledged Achilles" (Homer Book
IX). Now Achilles had warmly greeted Ulysses and as such Ulysses makes a warm toast, beginning his oration: "Hail....Achilles, we have had no scant of good cheer, neither in the
tent of Agamemnon, nor yet here; there has been plenty to eat and drink, but our thought turns upon no such matter. Sir, we are in the face of great
disaster, and without your help know not whether we shall save our fleet or lose it" (Homer Book IX). Ulysses then pleads with him, perhaps attacking his honor, and
states, "Up, then, and late though it be, save the sons of the Achaeans who faint before the fury of the Trojans. You will repent bitterly hereafter if you
do not, for when the harm is done there will be no curing it; consider ere it be too late, and save the Danaans from destruction" (Homer Book IX).
He tells him that he should not let his anger get in the way of his decisions, for apparently Achilles is known for his anger. He then pleads with him,
