to be much more than a diagnostic medical imaging tool. It is finding more and more applications, in fact, in surgery. Focused ultrasound is being applied in surgical
applications as diverse as skin tightening, prostrate surgery, and renal tumors. The intent of this paper is to first provide a brief overview of ultrasound as a surgical tool
and then to review the literature and report on its specific successes and shortcomings. The most common use of ultrasound in the past
has revolved around medical imaging (Abunnaja and Elhasi). It is commonly used to diagnose problems that ultimately require traditional surgical intervention (Abunnaja and Elhasi). That form of ultrasound,
however, relies only on low intensity energy waves. In its surgical applications these waves are greatly accentuated and this put a very powerful tool in the surgeons hands.
Ultrasound surgery is also being enhanced with the use of robots to guide it (Desai, Ganpule, Garg, et. al. 331). Ultrasound surgery is even being used for cosmetic reasons
such as tightening the skin and even to dissolve unwanted body fat (Napoli 28). Napoli (28) reports that one clinical trial resulted in measurable reductions in body dimensions in
the areas where the technique was employed. Indeed, "the decreases averaged 2 cm at 28 days, and were maintained 84 days post treatment" (Napoli 28).
