significant medical advancements, this couldnt be further from the truth. Just in the last decade, countries across the world have faced significant threats in the form of infection disease, including
SARS, the avian flu, and the 2009 swine flu epidemic. As a result, some of the most important work being done by scientists today is research into how infectious diseases
stemming from bacteria might be more effectively combatted. The discipline of microbiology in particular is ripe with new innovations and discoveries, including a 2007 article by OHehir and Dunphy which
suggests that ultraviolet light might be useful in eliminating the dangerous e.coli bacteria from supplies of drinking water. In this paragraph, the student is helped to summarize the article
in question. The backdrop for the study is enough to raise concern in just about anyone. In 2007, the same year that OHehir and Dunphy published their studies, Ireland was
in the midst of an epidemic. The problem was that the country as a whole, and in particular Galway City, had a problem with e.coli and cryptosporidium bacteria contaminating their
supplies of drinking water (OHehir & Dunphy, 2007). While Galway City obviously has modern water filtration and decontamination systems in place, the bacteria still managed to present itself and cause
a major problem. How is this possible? The reason is simply that e.coli and cryptosporidium molecules are microscopically shielded with strong outer shells, rendering them all but impervious to the
chlorination efforts that are effectively used to clean drinking water of less resilient forms of impurity (OHehir & Dunphy, 2007). It was critical to the health of the populace then,
that OHehir and Dunphy were able to proposed an effective means of getting rid of cryptosporidium and e.coli: the application of ultraviolet light. The implications of cryptosporidium and e.coli infection
