we look at the industry as a whole one way of considering the state of the industry is by way of Porters five forces model. The five forces Porter identifies
are the existing competitors, the threat of new entrants, substitute products (or services), and the power of purchasers and suppliers. The existing
competitors have been in the business some time, either entering with the large integrated mills or as later entrants with the minimills. The competition has been increase as we see
fore the market share of the most dominant competitor, USX who had over a 50% share ion the middle of the twentieth century, with this reduced to seventeen percent by
1997. New entrant are always a problem, and with the reduction of investment needed in a aminimill down to 5-10 % of
the former levels the barriers have reduced, however in monetary terms when this is still in the region $300 - $500 million then we can still argue the barriers are
that low. The major threat of both existing and new entrants appear to be form areas such as Japan and Canada where there is a need to look for alternative
