why things are as they are in a persons environment. Though most will argue that science fiction and fantasy are vast worlds apart in respect to their genres, what is
more applicable is that while the genres tend to be mostly different from one another, their use of mythological archetypes are identical. Science fiction is generally characterized by its
use of technology, advanced medical concepts, and such achievements as have not yet been achieved by mankind in this century. Generally set in future worlds with settings and complete cultures
constructed from scratch, these worlds can often be populated with creatures as diverse and bizarre as the authors mind to conceive them. Fantasy, while it also constructs worlds, draws
on settings from the past. These settings are generally Medieval in nature, but sometimes can go back further to the dawn of some sort of human evolution. Dragons, Unicorns, and
mystical happenings are generally utilized. The element of the supernatural is generally accepted as the norm. The supernatural is not readily apparent in the science fiction genre, the idea being
that science has explained everything. A good example is the movie, Forbidden Planet. This movie is loosely based on Shakespeares Tempest. The movie itself centers around the travels and
troubles of Dr. Morbius and his daughter Altaira who have been living on a desolate planet. A rescue team finally arrives lead by the dashing hero, Commander Adams. But, Dr.
Morbius urges them to leave immediately, that their lives are in danger. That dangers name is: Krell. His warnings prove prophetic when, one by one, members of Adams crew succumb
to a grim, violent death. This movie is shot in black and white and has all the usual trappings for a sci-fi flick of the fifties: UFO saucer, space explorers,
