Zedong overthrew the Chinese government in 1949 following two decades of civil war in the country, the United States turned its back on the country, seeking to annihilate communism, rather
than actively encouraging trade. These days, however, things are quite different. Though the U.S. and China may not agree philosophically or politically, both
have become trade partners. But the relationship hasnt all been rosy - there have been ups and downs over the years. Right now, the largest "down" is the huge
trade imbalance the U.S. has with China. Chinese/US Foreign Policy Though the U.S. considers China a strong trading partner, the government
consistently denounces Chinas human rights record (Evans, 2009). Supposedly "conditions" are placed on trade because of it, but the human rights scenario never really hindered Chinas "favored nation status," as
designated by the World Trade Organization in the 1990s. The relationship between the Peoples Republic of China and the U.S. began in 1972,
when President Richard Nixon visited China. By later in the decade, the U.S. offered diplomatic recognition to the PRC in hopes that it could fight back against the Soviet Union
(Promise and Challenge of An Emerging Superpower, 2008). Since that time, relations between the two countries have been described as "cautiously friendly," though the U.S. has been an
outspoken opponent of Chinese behavior (Promise and Challenge of An Emerging Superpower, 2008). These include the Chineses governments response to the 1989 Tiananmen Square riots, anti-U.S. sentiment following the
