It could be asserted that in order to be considered as a superpower, a nation must not only demonstrate its material and economic superiority over other countries, it
must also show that it is capable of both winning and mediating in conflicts. On the one hand, it is necessary to show that the nation possesses sufficient military capability
to overcome threats from other parts of the world, but it is also the case that larger and more powerful nations have a strategic role to play in the resolution
of conflicts which are taking place in other countries.
From this point of view, it is evident that the USA has, since the end of World War Two, both participated in conflicts and acted
as a mediator for others. For example, the US played an important role in the negotiations between Israel and Palestine at the Camp David summit, and also in the peace
process initiative between Britain and Northern Ireland.
Superpower nations have a number of different types of pressure which they can bring to bear on countries in conflict; apart from the threat of
military involvement itself, there are various economic and trade sanctions which can be brought into operation in the course of encouraging other countries to follow a specific line. This is
something which could be seen in the sanctions implemented against Cuba and South Africa, for instance.
