founding fathers. This handful of men hailed from all walks of life and all different socioeconomic levels. They had one characteristic in common, however. That characteristic was their
desire to create a government that was safeguarded at all levels against becoming oppressive. The first step in the process was the creation of a national Constitution.
The views of those men that formulated the terms of the Constitution were significantly divergent as to exactly what the Constitution should entail. These
views all came together, however, in Philadelphia 1787 when fifty-five men (who formally represented the interests of twelve states) convened for the Constitutional Convention. It is important to remember
when considering this historic event and its ultimate accomplishment that this was just eleven years after the American Revolution. Although the representatives were uniform in regard to the fact
that they were primarily young and of stable economic backgrounds, they were far from uniform regard to their experiences, beliefs, and opinions. Many were Revolutionary War veterans but many
were not, many were attorneys, many were not. They were in fact the mixture, volatile or not, which was just right for the eruption of this monumental moment in
American history and, ultimately, the production of that remarkable document we know as the Constitution of the United States. The time
encompassing the creation of our Constitution was a time when our governmental bodies were only loosely organized in prevailing state institutions. The complexities of the previous colonial administration had
