Ultimately, elections always appear to go to the candidates who are the most successful at raising money for their campaigns. Qualifications, the positions of the candidates on the
issues, and virtually all other considerations are secondary to that all-important consideration of which political organization can generate the most funds. While the student researching this topic should answer
the assignment questions from his or her own personal perspective, this writer/tutor not only believes this to be the most crucial element to running a successful campaign, but also its
most distasteful and potentially corrupting factor. Allen (1998) states that asking for money is always the candidates least favorite job, but also that it is the "most important one"
(p. 22). Unless a candidate is independently wealthy, Allen asserts that "life on the campaign trail" involves "dialing for dollars" as much as it does arguing the issues (1998, p.
22). Also, it is not necessarily a positive factor is a candidate, such as Steve Forbes or Ross Perot, can fund their campaigns with their own fortunes, as "voters
are likely to look askance at such a person" (Allen, 1998, p. 22). Americans, while we realize that campaigns take money, like to indulge in the fantasy that candidates
