taking the temperature of the reviving economy is a slow process. The numbers reported by the US Census Bureau in late August, 2004 reflect the governments assessment of the unemployment
rate and other figures for the fiscal year of 2003.1 These figures make the economy look weak, at best, as median income (adjusted for inflation) did not increase and the
number of Americans living in poverty, as well as the Americans living without health insurance, escalated. These facts are frustrating for the campaign to reelect President George W. Bush because
the countrys economic profile has improved, in many aspects, since those figures were recorded in 2003. Examination of the economic profile of the country, over all, shows that things have
improved, and continue to do so, under the Bush administration. In the last quarter of 2003, the US economic recovery began to pick up speed, as the Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) grew by 8.2 percent, the fastest pace in two decades.2 The GDP is now expanding at a rate of 4.8 percent.3 This growth has stimulated the growth of
the job market and 1.3 million jobs have been created in 2004, thus far.4 The drawback is that a great many of these new jobs are low wage, according to
Uwe Reinhardt, Princeton University economist.5 Also, the Bush administration still has a deficit in regards to job creation. There are 1.1 million fewer jobs available now than there were at
the beginning of 2001, which is a fact that Bushs Democratic opponent, John F. Kerry, cites often.6 Some good news for the Bush campaign is that key economic
