a topic which he feels supremely passionate about. In the same way that Mozart affects no two people in exactly the same way, the feeling of solitude is interpreted on
various levels and from as many varying perspectives as there are stars in the night sky. Two creative masters, Edward Hopper and W.H. Auden, both experienced a feeling of aloneness
and solitude. And while there are comparisons to be derived from the two works of these men, there are also differences in their basic view and presentation of the topic.
The artists main role in society should be to portray something to which any viewer can personally and emotionally relate(Ungles). One of the greatest comparisons between Hoppers painting, Nighthawks and
Audens poem Unknown citizen is the theme itself. The theme of solitude, of being alone. Nighthawks, which was completed in 1942 amongst the backdrop of World War II, shows a
night time cafe where there are a few customers and none of them together. A huge window shows a lonely looking street through it and one wonders if the people
who seem absorbed in their own selves are hiding from whatever it was that waits for them in the real world and they are in fact, seeking some sort of
refuge in the cafe. In this work the solitude, while sad, is also one of peacefulness. One might also say that it is a juxtaposition of inner war with
inner peace. For some of the customers it would seem that while in the cafe, they are at peace and for a while they can escape whatever it is that
waits for them. One is almost reminiscent of the show CHEERS where the workers would come in and hang out after work. Unlike the show Cheers, it is doubtful, however,
