that were to start within days of the receipt of the e-mail. If users didnt contact the registry, the e-mail warned that not only would telemarketers swarm the users phone,
but that the cell phone owner would have to pay for the calls. Though there was an element of truth in the
e-mail, it was misleading to the point that both the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communication Commission had to issue a response, stating that telemarketers werent about to swarm hapless
cell phone users, nor would users have to pay for the calls (Beyerle, 2007). The origin of this legend, according to the FCC, was that wireless companies started collecting data
for a national database on a list (Beyerle, 2007). Though none of the information was going to telemarketers, the rumor revolved around the fact that the wireless companies were going
to call everyones cell phone and put that information on a list (Beyerle, 2007). The result was a panicked response from users and a flood of cell phones going into
the do-not-call registry, despite the fact that automatic dialer telemarketing cell phones is already illegal in the majority of the United States (Beyerle, 2007).
Though urban legends have always been around, thanks to the Internet, theyre easier to spread these days. According to college professor Charles Hill, his "working definition" or
urban legends as stories too good to be true that are told as though they are true (Beyerle, 2007). Urban legends, he says, tend to take on a life of
