powerful, versatile and flexible operating systems (OS) in the computer world" (Lucent Technologies, 2002). Lucents web site goes on to say that UNIX remains popular for a variety of reasons,
such as the ability of this OS to operate on many machines - "from micros to supercomputers" - not to mention its portability, which has been appealing to many computer
manufacturers (Lucent Technologies, 2002). Despite the hype put forth by Lucent Technologies (which is understandable, as Bell Labs, which invented the UNIX
technology to begin with is Lucent predecessor), UNIX has proven to be an extraordinary technology tool that, despite huge changes in the high-tech and computing industry, continues to operate on
pretty much the same platform as it did when it was first conceived of during the late 1960s. Such longevity of systems is amazing - there always seems to be
new and improved systems coming out almost every day - take, for example, Microsoft, which first made its name by re-inventing the disk operating system (DOS), then moving onto the
Windows platform, and then consistently upgrading those. However, despite tweaks throughout the years, UNIX remains a steady system, one that offers programmers
and users the opportunity to use their computer systems to their maximum advantage. Its probably safe to say that if not for UNIX, computers would not be the efficient and
effective tools that we know them as today. History As with many computer histories, UNIX wasnt a planned phenomenon, rather it was
an outgrowth from a failed experiment to develop a dependable timesharing operating system during the mid-1960s between computer programmers (Lucent Technologies, 2002). Failed experiments within the computer programming field were
