the ranks, gained tenure, then retired at a pre-determined, mandatory age. However, with mandatory age being somewhat phased out because of the possibility of age discrimination, the question becomes how
to ease out the older professors to give the younger ones a chance. Other concerns that crop up in this scenario include health care costs for the older professors, as
well as keeping the knowledge that the more seasoned professors provide. In other words, institutions of higher education these days face a dilemma. On the one hand, they want to
retain the knowledge and experience the older professors bring to the institution, while ensuring that the younger ones get their chance at advancement and tenure. On the other hand, with
rising costs, there is a necessity to ease out some of the older professors, and to do so without shelling out huge amounts in pensions. Furthermore, some of those older
individuals arent going too quietly - thanks to the current economy, drops in individual wealth and retirement plans are making older professors re-think the validity of out-and-out retirement (Yakotroski, 2009).
Its a safe assumption (and studies tend to show) that many people wont retire if theyre not secure enough in their
financial position to do so (Yakotroski, 2009). Furthermore, a lot of faculty members consider buyouts as a way in which the university is politely saying "thanks for your services, youre
too old for us now, see you later and dont let the door hit you on the behind on your way out." In addition to cutting back a professors full-time
salary, a buyout is a guaranteed way to slice up a professors ego and ability to contribute post-retirement. Weiler (1987) points
