against one another about. On the one hand, almost everyone agrees that the current reimbursement system, run by the third-party payment system, is horribly broken. There are few people out
there who dont agree that its disgusting that in a nation that spends more per capita on health care, that more than 40 million Americans are uninsured. And the majority
of the nation is in agreement that something has to be done, before it gets a lot worse. The arguments come because
no one can come up with a solution. The rub is that the problem is so complex, there really isnt a single solution. This is the reality. But the single
solution proposed - universal health care coverage - is to solve all of our health care problems, at least in theory. Have the system under a single-payer, the supporters note,
and the system will become efficient, no one will be left without insurance, costs will go down, and so on. The theory behind this is, if everyone is insured, theyll
be able to get better health care. This will make us a healthier nation, and one in which health care costs arent running amok.
The problem is, this is too simplistic a viewpoint. Universal coverage involves more than putting the entire cumbersome system into a single-payer scenario. Those who have tried it
(Massachusetts, for one) are finding out that the system isnt managing costs very well at all. In this paper, well discuss why
