that war, by and large, were civilians, whose only offense was their ethnicity and religion. By and large, the United States was so far removed from the struggle that was
going on in Europe that the plight of people whom they did not know was of little consequence. The foreign policy of the United States changed as it entered the
arena of World War II and as a result involved America in the affairs of others living thousands of miles beyond her borders. Interestingly enough, the United States spoke
out against most of the proposals outlined in the Treaty of Versailles which was a result of the first World War. Woodrow Wilson, then the President, made several counter proposals
that would lessen the blows that the British and French were bent on imposing. In fact, it becomes clear in hindsight that neither Britain or France were intent on doing
justice and making Germany pay reparations. They wanted clear and devastating punishment even to the final end of the German nation. This
is evident in the refusal to consider any other offers from other countries in regard to the Versailles Treaty. Eventually, this impasse over the Treaty lead to the United States
opting to abstain from joining the League of Nations when it was formed. If one had to point at a single cause of World War II and the rise of
Hitler, it would have to be the Treaty of Versailles. Mistakes had been made that, eventually, would only serve to increase German aggression, and would drive Germany to do desperate
