Jefferson understood the power that land gave a country, especially a young country. With this in mind he sanctioned the now famous excursions by Lewis and Clark. Stephen Ambrose, noted
historian, tells the story of Lewis and Clark in his book, Undaunted Courage. "Lewis was born in a place where the West invited exploration,
but the East could provide education and knowledge, where the hunting was magnificent but plantation society provided refinement and enlightenment, where he could learn wilderness skills while sharpening his wits
about such matters as surveying, politics, natural history, and geography"(Ambrose 19). This sets the tone for Ambroses novel. The story, ostensibly, is about
Meriwether Lewis, the leader of the Lewis and Clark expeditions. What comes from an understanding of Lewis is the entire vision of a country that was just coming into its
own. Doggedly determined to discover and claim the lands that they found before anyone else could, Lewis shared in Thomas Jeffersons dream that the entire country called America, should begin
and end with an ocean at each coast. This first half of the book chronicles the background and mindset of Meriweather Lewis and why he was the only man for
the job at the time. It was his combination of intelligence and knowledge of the outdoors that made him the perfect candidate to both explore the land and to scientifically
document the passages. When Lewis and Clark returned from their famous expedition they were hailed as heroes.
