the rallying cry for abolitionists, as well as the target of hatred for Southern plantation owners and their overseers. Detailing the "peculiar institution" of slavery, the book details slaves escape
(Eliza and Harry) and the attitude of another pious, accepting slave (Uncle Tom). But what also ends up adding some color to this novel are the three slave owners and
their different outlooks - Shelby, St. Claire, and Simon Legree. Its interesting to note that the two former slave owners (Shelby and St. Claire) are Southerners, who tend to be
kind-hearted, while the thoroughly evil Simon Legree is a Yankee, who is brutal and hard-hearted (and who, in fact, kills Tom by beating him to death).

Tom rescues his daughter (Little Eva) from a drowning death. St. Clare is one who believes in paying his debts and, in fact, promises Tom his freedom in exchange for
his daughters life. That he dies before he can grant this promise is immaterial - the fact that he supports slavery, but actually sees the more "human" side of it
speaks somewhat for the mans integrity. This, despite the fact it is his daughters deathbed wish that her father set Tom free.
