the rallying cry for abolitionists, as well as the target of hatred for Southern plantation owners and their overseers. Detailing the "peculiar institution" of slavery, the book details slaves escape (Eliza and Harry) and the attitude of another pious, accepting slave (Uncle Tom). But what also ends up adding some color to this novel are the three slave owners and their different outlooks - Shelby, St. Claire, and Simon Legree. Its interesting to note that the two former slave owners (Shelby and St. Claire) are Southerners, who tend to be kind-hearted, while the thoroughly evil Simon Legree is a Yankee, who is brutal and hard-hearted (and who, in fact, kills Tom by beating him to death). If these three are any way alike, its that they dont seem to be bothered by the institution of slavery. Shelby, a slave owner, is seen as "compassionate" in that he doesnt like to split up slave families. Nonetheless, he doesnt see anything wrong with the institution - in fact, hes convinced its necessary for the South to remain economically viable. On the other side of the coin is Augustine St. Clare, who "buys" Tom from Haley when Tom rescues his daughter (Little Eva) from a drowning death. St. Clare is one who believes in paying his debts and, in fact, promises Tom his freedom in exchange for his daughters life. That he dies before he can grant this promise is immaterial - the fact that he supports slavery, but actually sees the more "human" side of it speaks somewhat for the mans integrity. This, despite the fact it is his daughters deathbed wish that her father set Tom free. ...
