a $25 million donation to open a new facility dedicated to enhancing the universitys stem cell program research. The laboratory building costs approximately $123 million and the Eli and Edythe
Broad Foundation agreed to help subsidize 20 percent of it with their extremely generous contribution. The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) also contributed $34.8 million to see the facility
come to fruition. Ray and Dagmar Dolby of Dolby Laboratories contributed $16 million and the university has begun a financial campaign to raise the final $47 million. The building is
slated to open in the summer of 2010, and it will be the campuss first new research facility since 1968. Designed by New York architect Rafael Vinoly, the 75,000-square-foot facility
will be built behind the UCSF Medical center on Parnassus Avenue right on campus. The building will house 250 researchers and staff, including 18 principal investigators. CIRM has awarded more
than $614 million in research grants, including $82 million to UCSF (Alladay, 2008). The planned headquarters will hold 25 labs, spread among a series of four split-level floors, each with
a terraced roof. A covered bridge will connect the building to clinics at the Medical Center. In northern California, in communities such as Berkeley, San Francisco and San Jose, most
