War II, the nation enjoyed several years of prosperity, but then it became evident, the regular citizen was struggling to make ends meet. In addition, the elderly of the
nation were struggling to pay for their necessary medical care, and as a result of the war, many families consisted of single mothers with several children. In addition to
the social issues which were affecting the entire country, the south was facing more and more unrest due to their stance on the equality of African Americans. BACKGROUND In 1963
the then President of the United States, John f. Kennedy, was assassinated and the political mood of the country took a drastic change. When Lyndon B. Johnson, ascended to
the Presidency, he used the combination of the new mood in the country and Johnsons own political savvy to continue Kennedys programs. Several assistance programs both for individuals and
families were also stated in the 1960s. Medicare was one of those programs and was the point program for President Lyndon Johnsons War on Poverty. Other programs which
were a part of the War on Poverty were the Medicaid Program, the Food Stamp Program and jointly the federal and state governments agreed to jointly provide welfare grants to
help to support low-income parents with children. CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT One of the most notable programs was the involvement of the Federal Government in the issue of Civil Rights.
The Civil Rights Movement in the United States had, by the 1960s been a long, continuous struggle to bring the concept of civil rights and equality to all American citizens
