the 1960s. Historically there has been no arguing the fact than men are paid more than women and whites more than minorities for the same employment. There is
also no arguing that this trend continues to at least some degree even today. There is a number of wide diversity of economic factors which contribute to this phenomena.
These include factors such as the rising education wage premium but they also include those other aspects of work skills which are less commonly thought about (Kodrzycki PG).
There is also an interesting interplay of social and political influences with the labor market which influence the phenomena of wage inequality (Kodrzycki PG).
To find proof of historic discrepancies we must first look to the 1970s. In 1979 a male at the ninetieth percentile of the wage distribution earned
over three times a man from the tenth percentile (U.S. Department of Labor PG). One would think that over time these discrepancies would eventually disappear. Rather than narrowing
the gap, however, wage inequalities were on a dramatic increase between 1980 and 1995 (Kodrzycki PG). In 1992 the discrepancy between the male average earnings at the ninetieth percentile
verses the tenth percentile had increased to over four times as much. The discrepancy for women increased as well, from 3.1 in 1979 to 3.7 in 1992. There
was no real loss in real earnings yet during this same time period the average earnings for full-time employed males fell about three percent (Kodrzycki PG). Women, on the
other hand, showed a fifteen percent increase in average earnings and do appear to be closing the gap somewhat in pay discrepancies (Kodrzycki PG).
