While most people are familiar with racial rioting such as those which occurred during the 1960s the writer demonstrates how riots between 1915 to 1919 were fundamentally different from those in the 60s. Sixties riots were characterized by violence which was primarily directed against property. The riots in the early part of this century were characterized by violence directed toward people. form of violence toward property - i.e. stores are broken into and looted. Any violence shown toward passer-bys is purely secondary and incidental. During the early part of this century,
racial rioting took the form of communal riots, that is-people constituted the main target of the rioters, not property. Consequently, these riots were very bloody affairs, and more of them
occurred then Americans would like to remember. This form of rioting reached a peak in the summer of 1919 just after World War I for reasons which will be discussed.
First, the reasons behind such rioting should be examined to fully comprehend this phase in American history. The first of these "communal riots" developed due to power struggles between white
and black communities over public areas where racial dominance was unclear (Upton 4). Contested areas might center on a beach or a park. Usually, it followed a pattern where whites
invaded black neighborhoods, and there were often attacks on blacks in white dominated areas as these blacks were attempting to return home. Often violence would first erupt along the fringe
areas between black and white dominated areas (4). Weaponry usually consisted of such things as bricks, rocks, sticks, and fists with guns and rifles playing only an occasional role.
Before dwelling specifically on the rioting that occurred during and just after the First World War, it should be realized by the student that African-Americans had been the target for
violent acts of pathological hatred for years. Spurred on by propagandist plays such as "The Clansman" (which was later made into one of the first motion pictures, "Birth of a
