able to experience the fundamental differences in these two cultures, as the U.S. is considered "to be a low-context, individualistic culture in which ones personal needs and desires are paramount"
and Korea is primarily a "collectivistic and high-context" culture (Wallace 3). In other words, the culturally emphasis in Korea is on society, the "we," rather than in the individual,
the "I." The following comparison of the educational system in these two countries considers this perspective and how it contributes to differentiating the two school systems. First of all,
there are both similarities and marked differences between the structures in the two educational systems. The structure of the South Korean educational system consists of "six years of compulsory elementary
school, three years middle (lower secondary) school, and three years of high (upper secondary) school, and four years" to obtain a university degree, two-three years for a degree from a
junior college (Park 183). After graduating middle school, students proceed to either an academic high school or a vocational school (Park 184). There is intense competition to get into
the best high schools, which prompted the South Korean government to institute a nationwide entrance examination requirement. Those students passing the exam are assigned to an academic high school within
their area based on the results of a lottery (Park 184). In 1998, entrance exams for high school were abolished in four major metropolitan areas, as consideration for admittance became
based on middle school activities records (Park 184). Nevertheless, the exam is still the main criterion for admittance in other areas. This structure is similar to the U.S. in
