since its creation. By World War I, however, we had began to extend tentatively feelers into the world, feelers that marked our ultimate move away from the isolationist stance
that had characterized so much of our history. The thesis can be presented, in fact, that not only was: World War I was just one more step in
our move away from isolationism, it was a move that was mandated by the very concerns that had made us isolationists in the first place. Obviously, U.S.
foreign and domestic policies have changed considerably since our earliest years. There has, however, been a very well defined tendency for us to look at ourselves as superior
to others in the world. This tendency is, in fact, obvious since the beginning chapters of our history. As will be demonstrated below, it was originally reflected in
our ideology of manifest destiny, continued to be reflected in our preoccupation with isolationism, and remains reflected in our current focus on imperialism. When considering isolationism, it is important to
distinguish, as Hayes (2004) does, between altruistic isolationism and national-interest isolationism. It is also important to note that Self interest can be defined either narrowly or quite expansively (Rathbun, 2008).
Our historic focus on isolationism has for the most part been based on national-interest (Hayes, 2004). This originally evolved for a number of reasons. One of our
primary desires was to exclude European powers from the Americas. As Lang (2004) contends, "American isolationism was always more about Europe than it was about cutting America off from
