7 sources. SA140Isr.rtf I. Introduction The conflict between Palestine and Israel has become quite prominent in recent years,
and to some extent, the United States has gotten involved. One may look at the conflict with respect to the international strategy equation. The equation includes the objectives of
preserving independence, maintaining freedom and preserving the territorial integrity of the United States. Maintaining U.S. allied interests abroad is another part of the equation and helping to shape a world
where freedom and democracy reign is also an important dimension in foreign policy. Shaping a world where international states can coexist without the use of force is an important goal
of the United States. It is this latter part of the equation that enters the picture in respect to problems in the Middle East. In looking at the Middle East
conflict along with U.S. policy, it becomes clear as to why U.S. intervention has become necessary at times.
II. Instruments of Foreign Policy While foreign policy is aligned with ideology, it must be effected with the use of
instruments or methods. These methods vary and include things such as alliances and cultural exchanges. First, in looking at alliances, there are two types, one of which is military and
another is economic. Military alliances have been exemplified in recent days as Britain had come to the aid of the United States after the attack on the World Trade Center.
