Manuel 10/2010 Please Starting in 1939 and lasting until 1945, World War II claimed the lives of tens of millions of soldiers and civilians. The conflict involved most of the worlds powers with the major players being the Axis Powers of Germany, Italy and Japan fighting against the Allied Powers of England, America and the USSR. When the war first started in 1939 after Germany invaded Poland, the United States was not heavily involved or too concerned with what was transpiring in Europe. They knew the expansion of the German empire under Aldof Hitler could be problematic but they had no desire to fight a war thousands of miles from home. However, on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese Imperial Navy launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to attempt to establish dominance of the Pacific Ocean. Former President Franklin D. Roosevelts said Dec. 7 would be a date which will live in infamy and on Dec. 8, the United States declared war against Japan and thus began their entry into World War II. This essay will further discuss the attack on Pearl Harbor and the events that led to the United States decision to fight the Axis Powers and enter into the conflict which would later be called World War II. While some conspiracy theorists have claimed that U.S. forces knew of Japans intentions to bomb Pearl Harbor, most historians agree that the attack came as a total surprise (Hanyok, 2009).
