Because the airline industry relies on so many factors to keep it running, its a very complicated industry to follow as well as understand. Still, its an interesting one to
study, because economic changes end up impacting air travel and the airline industry, perhaps more so than any other industry in the U.S.
In this paper, well examine various parts of the airline industry by providing an external environmental analysis and an internal environmental analysis. This particular paper deals only with the
U.S. airline industry - mainly because foreign airlines are different (for one thing, theyre subsidized by the governments of their countries and the competition is somewhat different than what goes
on in the U.S.) PART I EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT ANALYSIS Economic Forces Fuel Costs. Because most airlines run on fuel, this
is a huge factor in terms of how well airlines will do on a profit (or lack thereof) basis. The problem here is that rising fuel costs are cutting into
both profits and operating income (Cummings, 2003). Nor are fuel or oil costs anticipated to go down any time soon. OPEC, in response to a potential shortage of oil, is
