Furthermore, it is a combination of these different criteria upon which a raise is determined but neither the raise nor the amount are part of an automatic schedule; there are no caps. This is not true in the field of education, in K - 12 or in higher education institutions. In most states, K - 12 school districts have a set salary schedule which includes automatic annual increases for number years served in that district and for taking a certain number of college units. Additionally, the salary schedule is negotiated annually which further increases the teachers income. Teachers are guaranteed job security in that they usually receive tenure by their third year in the district, after which time, it becomes very difficult to dismiss them. College professors fall into a different economic category which is far more restrictive in terms of their income and job security. There is an extremely complex and rigorous system for promotions from one level of professorship to the next and it is through this system, they receive salary increases. The rules under which the University of California faculty works will be discussed on the following pages with particular emphasis on the economic effects the salary system has on the professors. The process of getting hired in the first place to moving up in the ranks is directly related to how the structure impacts the economic status of each professor.
