travel in the 21st century, protecting such avenues from terrorist threat is a majorly important consideration for the government. This paper will explore the role that the Department of Homeland
Security plays in port security, and analyze the most significant threats facing the nations ports. This paragraph helps the student begin to explore the role of the Department of
Homeland Security. The Department of Homeland Security is the government agency which is most responsible for employing effective security measures to protect the nations ports. This department was created as
a result of the passage of the Homeland Security Act of 2002, and has the responsibility of providing security against terrorism. It accomplishes this goal largely through two means. The
first is the use of the Transportation Security Administration to monitor and control access to airports, maritime ports, and government buildings. The second is the role the Department plays in
coordinating with local and state law enforcement agencies in order to build vital networks to decrease response time in the event of a terrorist incident, and also establish networks through
which important information can be quickly shared and relayed, to hopefully prevent terrorist activity from occurring at all. The particular threats that the Department of Homeland Security faces in
the nations ports can assume many different forms. The first form that security threats take is piracy. The media is full of stories related to piracy, typically involving roving bandits
