However, to truly understand the role that social movements play in society and history, it is critical to understand the various different types of social movements that exist. This paper will explore four of the most basic types of social movements, and provide contemporary modern day examples of each. This paragraph helps the student begin to explore what is meant by a revolutionary social movement. The first major type of social movement to explore is the revolutionary movement. Simply put, a revolutionary movement is one which attempts to overthrow an old social order and impose a new social order in its stead. It is generally the result of oppressive social conditions, wherein one class has been sufficiently marginalized and oppressed that revolutionary consciousness is able to breed and spur a large number of people to action. Generally, a revolutionary social movement contains some strong economic element, often related to the regulation of productive forces. For instance, historically, various communist revolutions around the world have been carried out in reaction to the exploitative force of capitalism. Once a revolutionary social movement gains traction, it is generally able to propagate new social relationships that would not have otherwise been possible. A great example of a modern day revolutionary social movement would be the student uprising in Egypt, which successfully deposed the countrys oppressive president and established conditions wherein democracy may eventually thrive. By contrast, a reformist social movement is somewhat more reserved than a revolutionary social movement. Rather than seeking to totally destroy the old system and replace it, a reformist believes that it is possible to simply change the system to some ground of compromise with which all parties can attain equitable status.
